At Kamaama Estates, everyone is part of a larger family. There's a sense of community and solidarity among our workers. Employment is about the person and their entire family, and the local communities and economy. We pride ourselves on providing employment opportunities that span generations, creating a dynamic workplace where seasoned workers, elderly, women, and youth come together. This blend fosters an exchange of traditional knowledge and modern techniques, enriching our work environment.

We place high value on our women workers, recognising them as the backbone of agriculture in our nation. Their participation in farm operations extends beyond earning an income; it empowers them within the community and contributes significantly to their livelihoods and ultimately the development of the area.

For the youth, working on the farm is more than a job; it offers financial independence, valuable skills, and experiences that lay the groundwork for future career paths.

We believe that when workers feel valued and integrated into a community, their engagement and commitment to work amplify, benefiting everyone. This is the essence of the mothers' way – building a close-knit, supportive community at the heart of our operations.

The Foundations of Our Family Farm

Kamaama Farm was born in 1994. Our journey has its roots in the expertise and passion of our father, Fred Luzinda Mukasa Edward and his mother, Teddy Mary Kabasomi Amooti. His previous work experience selling and distributing veterinary pharmaceuticals and drugs for 13 years as Managing Director provided him with a wealth of knowledge in animal husbandry. This expertise was pivotal in ensuring optimal management of the dairy business line.

At the start Fred focused on dairy, led by his deep passion for farming and strong leadership skills. He also applied to poultry farming, diversifying our agricultural pursuits.

His venture into these farms was more than just about animal care; he brought a keen business sense to managing the operational and financial aspects of a dairy business line. This, combined with his strong leadership, decision-making, and organisational abilities, made him a respected figure in the agricultural community.

His exceptional interpersonal skills and business acumen equipped him to navigate the complex

challenges of establishing and running a farm.

Our Beginnings in Coffee

Over a decade ago, supported by the poultry business, we added coffee to our farm operations. We collaborated with the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) to acquire coffee seedlings and establish a coffee estate.

The decision to enter coffee production was influenced by Fred's working experience in the coffee industry, which started in 2004 as Board Secretary and Head of finance and Administration at UCDA for a period of 10 years.

For sustainable coffee agronomy, we plant coffee under shade. Our choices of coffee shade trees are Matook, Gonja, apple bananas, Ficus and Albizia. The sale of these bananas is also an alternative source of income, providing food security for the surrounding community.

We have grown from a modest 10 acres to 100 acres of coffee. With continued acreage expansion, we have established a certified coffee nursery (with support from UCDA & NACORI (National Coffee Research Institute) for the coffee estates, but to also support the planting needs for the surrounding community with quality coffee seedlings.

Kamaama Estates, Honouring Amooti, as our brand image

The farm Kamaama, which translates to "For Mother", is inspired by Teddy Mary Kabasomi Amooti, who is also the brand image on our logo.

The logo was drawn from a hand drawn picture of Teddy Mary Kabasomi Amooti in 1967, when she was an English undergraduate student at Makerere University, Uganda's largest and oldest university.

We honour her as our grandmother, but also as a trailblazer in our family and our community. In our family, Amooti is deeply revered for her wisdom, influence, and her exceptionally kind and generous nature, always open and eager to learn. To this day, as a guardian of vast cultural knowledge and wisdom, she still plays a vital role in the company's decision-making and in preserving our culture within our family and community. Her legacy and influence continue to inspire every aspect of our work and values.

By naming our brand and company after her, we celebrate and honour her central role and profound impact. Kamaama is a tribute to the strength, wisdom, and nurturing spirit of our grandmother. It reflects the profound respect and esteem she is held in within our family and community.

By recognising Amooti's key role in our brand name, we also want to honour women. We recognise and value the vital roles women play as custodians of cultural knowledge, caregivers, and leaders in every part of our business.
