Coffee Processing

We use both natural and honey processed methods in our processing.

New Wet Processing Mill at Kamaama Estates

Our new wet processing plant began operating in 2024. This purpose-built facility is designed efficiently, with sturdy concrete walls and floors. Windows provide natural light and ventilation. Inside, the processing room houses the pulper, which removes the outer layer of coffee cherries.

Our concrete tanks are specifically designed for coffee flotation, these tanks help ensure uniform coffee density, resulting in an even roast and maintaining a consistent cup and profile.

The wet hulling area is fully fenced to keep animals out, ensuring the coffee beans remain clean while drying on our 100ft x 100ft drying yard, where there's plenty of room to spread the beans on tarpaulins and racks for even sun exposure.

Our commitment remains steadfast in producing high-quality coffee while fostering a sense of community among our employees. Over time, our wet hulling plant will extend its services to neighbouring farmers, benefiting both our estate and the local agricultural community.

Kamaama Roastery's Progress in Coffee Roasting

We've made notable strides in coffee roasting, following comprehensive training at UCDA's quality department. We've worked on mastering the essentials of the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) for both Robusta and Arabica beans.

The expertise of Mbula Musau from Utake Coffee Limited in Kenya, a respected figure in the coffee world, has been integral to our learning. Her experience as a World Barista Championship Sensory Judge and a Q Grader Instructor has primed us for the next steps in our coffee roasting adventure.

We currently outsource our roasting services to our precise specifications as we work towards having our own roaster. For our Robusta beans, we favour a medium-dark roast, bringing out diverse taste profiles, including caramel, butter, vanilla, dark chocolate, and floral notes. In order to maintain a uniform cup profile, we ensure to roast our coffee per screen size.

We are about to start roasting ourselves, excited to meet new customers and serve both local and global markets. We're already making a name for ourselves in the coffee world, with plans to bring great coffee to Masaka and beyond.
